If history has taught us one thing, maps have not been formed in peacetime, and territories owe their appearance to continual shifting of borders, fueled by wars and conflicts. But there is a place in Italy, where history was wrong. We are talking about the strange case of Milano Marittima, a city born thanks to a contract signed between public and private.

It was 1907 when a group of Milanese industrialists and the administrators of Cervia gathered around a table to talk about the construction of a new city. On the one hand, the Milanese tried to build a place in the image and likeness of Milan, a place where in the summer the good bourgeoisie could be transferred without upsetting their habits and style; on the other, the administrators of Cervia who find themselves in this land with abandoned houses and wrecks – close to the sea – unhealthy and onerous to be reclaimed. Here the agreement is made, in 1911 the “anonymous company of Milano Marittima for the development of the beach of Cervia” is born.

Of the name there is little to say, Milano Marittima, indicates exactly what the Milanese wanted, a Milan overlooking the sea. The project of the city is entrusted to the painter and poster designer (not to an architect), Giuseppe Palanti who takes up the model of “garden city” of Ebenezer Howard. Thus the city was born first on paper, in the genius of a painter who begins to think about it and to design it as a set of small villas surrounded by the luxuriant pinewood, each with its direct entrance to the beach. One of the first villas to rise is that of Palanti: a small jewel of beauty and efficiency.

In 1912 Milano Marittima took shape and from then on grew year after year, becoming a model for the other seaside resorts on the Romagna Riviera, built in the following years. The garden city experiment worked. The contract has borne fruit and today Milano Marittima is one of the most glamorous resorts on the Riviera, which retains that ancient link with its older sister, so much so that in 2015 that of Milano Marittima is elected as the official beach of the Expo. The Milanese continue to come, but there are others, especially paparazzi and VIPs.

The nightlife is more than lively and the beaches resemble those of the Californian films, with luxurious hotels on the beach and panoramic swimming pools. The time of discreet villas is over … Milan has changed so Milano Marittima has also had to adapt …
